Solar installations and the use of solar energy in Georgia are on the rise. Protective Structures Ltd. in Alpharetta, GA, recently installed a 12.6KW solar PV system. It was the first commercial solar installation for Sawnee EMC; a solar energy integration company, Solar Energy USA, installed it. The solar array install was commissioned in January of 2009.

After the solar installation and analysis of the online monitoring for the solar panel system, the energy production exceeded expectations of solar energy capability within the first 10 months. The owners immediately invested in more than doubling the PV system to a total of 31.2 KW.

“We were able to take advantage of incentives on the state and federal side along with depreciation which improved our end-of-year outcome. The best part is we have levelized your energy cost for our life in this building,” said building owner, Vince. “We have a system that meets and usually exceeds our power demands, so now we will never be affected by power increases.”

“Our commercial customers are more progressive, they have historically looked ahead and have made good decisions, and are profitable even in economic downturns. They aren’t extreme but just want to be as independent as possible,” said Perry Bell, President of Solar Energy USA.

Solar installations in Georgia have more than tripled from 2009 to 2010 and the solar energy business has grown over 45% annually for the past two years—nationally. This makes solar energy installations one of the fastest growing industries in the world. Increasing power costs and lower solar system costs, coupled with state and national incentives, have made solar electricity a more popular choice than ever before.
