A South Carolina town will host a plant that manufactures solar cells, representing a $300 million investment that could provide 1,000 jobs in the next three years, according to a published report.

AQT Solar of Sunnyvale, California plans to hire 60 people by the end of this year for the facility in Blythewood, and it hopes to begin manufacturing solar cells by next year.

“We’ve got a group from California that has selected South Carolina as their home. That’s something we really need to celebrate,” Joe Taylor, commerce secretary for the state of South Carolina, told The State newspaper. “I do believe the selection of Columbia will put the city and the state in a more positive light when it comes to alternative energy.”

AQT also is enthused about plans for its new home. Chief executive officer Michael Bartholomeusz said purchase orders thus far total $100 million and orders for $150 million more presently are being negotiated.

“Everything that we make for the next two years is already sold out,” Bartholomeusz said. “The market reception has been fantastic.”
