Georgia Power, the largest power provider in the state of Georgia, began accepting bids today for it’s future  solar power plant project which is scheduled to break ground in 2015.

The company has received years of complaints that it was focusing too much on nuclear energy and not enough on solar energy systems.

Georgia Power spokesperson Lynn Wallace says solar is now more financially feasible.

“The cost has come down pretty significantly on solar for sure,” says Wallace.

Because of this decreased cost of a solar energy system, the company is going to build a 50MW solar power plant which will generate as much solar energy needed to power 20,000 homes.

“We should be moving forward and signing contracts December of this year,” says Wallace. “The (solar power plant) resource wouldn’t go online until June of 2015.”
