The 1.8 MW (megawatt) solar installation is the company’s first and the third largest PV solar roof in North Carolina. The system will offset 90% of the North Carolina-based business’ yearly power bills, bringing it very close to becoming a net zero facility.

Jayna Long, manager of sustainability for Old Dominion spoke of the project and said, “”The solar panel system is a sound investment for Old Dominion from both an economic and environmental perspective. The electricity produced by the panels is routed into the local power grid and will fulfill the energy needs of nearly 200 homes this year. We are committed to environmental stewardship projects and are using this solar project to determine the feasibility of installing alternative power sources in other facilities in our network.”

This PV solar installation is the second part of an energy reduction plan by Old Dominion. The company first focused on installing energy efficient lighting to reduce their power bill by lowering the number of kWh (kilowatt-hours) each light fixture consumed.
