The following article contains a recap of solar installation news for the week of February 6th, 2012:

President’s Helicopter Hanger Now Powered By Solar

The hanger for the President’s helicopter squadron now includes a 120kW solar array using Georgia-made solar panels and is estimated to save over $10,000 annually on electric bills. This solar installation is one example showcasing an attempt of fulfilling the government’s goal to produce 50% of the Navy’s energy by renewable sources in the next eight years.

Another Megawatt Solar Installation Coming To North Carolina

The southern region of North Carolina will soon be home to a 12-acre solar farm that should produce the energy equivalent of powering 600 homes annually.  This North Carolina solar installation will total 2.4MW (megawatts) and should be generating 3.5 Million kWhs (kilowatt hours) each year once completed in April. The project will support the state in being 9th in the nation in terms of generated solar power and one of the first states in the southeast to create a Renewable Energy and Efficiency Portfolio Standard.

Super Bowl Contestants Return Home To Solar Powered Stadium

One of last night’s Super Bowl competitors is returning home to a solar installation on their stadium. The New England Patriots are just one of the multiple NFL teams that play in a facility powered by solar energy. The team saw a 525kW solar array installed in 2009 which provides it with 30% of its power, and plans have been announced for an additional photovoltaic system, a 1MW solar array, to be installed before the start of the upcoming season. According to the Patriot’s website, “One of the goals of this project is to inform and demonstrate to the general public that distributed renewable power systems are a viable and practical component of our energy future.”
