Chevy To Debut All-Electric ‘Spark’ Car

Chevy could soon be releasing a plug-in all-electric vehicle (EV) in to the American automotive market.


In June 2011 Chevy unveiled the Beat EV in India – Chevy says the little electric Beat has an electric range of roughly 80 miles.


According to the Chevy Spark website, “This stylish little guy’s first-gen has been bobbing and weaving through European streets for a year now. Designed to fit your city and your life, the compact Spark slides easily into those tight parking spots that other cars don’t dare dream about.”


GM initially would not confirm or deny the possible new EV rumors, but internet users were quick to point out the similarities of the Beat EV and the Spark. Chevy has also released an all-electric version of it’s popular Cruze model in South Korea:


LeftLane reports that the EV Cruze will use a 31-kWh battery pack — a good amount larger than the Leaf’s 24kWh pack — along with a 200 HP electric motor, which is said to propel the car forward to 60 mph in a quick 8.2 seconds. A fully-charged battery pack should power the car for 100 miles with recharging from a 220-volt outlet clocking in between 8 and 10 hours. There has been no indication as to if or when the EV Cruze will hit the US auto market.

Micky Bly, GM’s executive director of global electric systems, said: “We’re taking information from our electric-car test fleets to help us formulate product strategy.” Nonetheless, rumors have been spreading all over the internet as electric car enthusiasts cross their fingers for GM’s first battery electric vehicle. Since 1993.

The Spark EV would be Chevrolet’s first production EV since the EV1, and the company says it will offer sneak previews for the new concept car that uses A123 Systems lithium nanophosphate batteries, and sport an 85-kilowatt (114-horsepower) electric motor.
