Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park located between Marietta and Kennesaw, Georgia is a 2,923 acre National Battlefield that preserves a Civil War battleground of the Atlanta Campaign. Opposing forces maneuvered and fought here from June 19, 1864 until July 2, 1864.

Did you know the Kennesaw Mountain Visitor’s Center was powered by solar panels?

According to Tom Sparks, Facilities Director with the park, 288 solar panels were installed on the main building as part of an ARRA project in 2009. The 70kW solar array uses panels from Norcross, Georgia-based solar manufacturer Suniva (click here to read our previous blog on Suniva). The grid-tied PV system also uses 6 Fronius inverters.

The solar energy system powering the Kennesaw Mountain Visitor’s Center provides approximately 30-45% of the overall power required for daily operations. Plans are developing to install a monitor in the lobby which will display live solar power production data related to the rooftop panels.

When asked his thoughts on the solar panel system, Kennesaw Mountain’s Sparks had this to say: “Prices have certainly come down since our solar project was installed in 2009. I recommend that anyone curious about solar look into it.”
